How to Choose the Right Urn Size? (A Simple Guide)
Share
Choosing a final resting place for a beloved companion is a deeply personal task. One of the most common questions we receive at Mira Ceramics is: "How do I know if the ashes will fit?"
The Golden Rule: 1 lb = 1 Cubic Inch
The standard rule in the memorial industry is straightforward: one pound of a pet’s (or person’s) healthy body weight equals approximately one cubic inch of remains.
Example: If your faithful dog weighed 30 lbs, you will need an urn with a volume of at least 30 cubic inches.
Mira Ceramics Size Guide
To make your choice easier, we have categorized our handmade ceramic urns into two main sizes:
| Pet/Use | Average Weight | Recommended Urn Size |
|---|---|---|
| Pocket Pets (Hamsters, Birds) | Up to 5 lbs | 5 cu. in. (Mini/Keepsake) |
| Standard Cats | 8 – 15 lbs | 18–45 cu. in. (Small/Medium) |
| Small to Medium Dogs | 15 – 45 lbs | 18–45 cu. in. (Small/Medium) |
| Sharing a Memory | Token amount | 5 cu. in. (Mini/Keepsake) |
What if I am "Between" Sizes?
If your pet was exactly 45 lbs, or if you are unsure of the exact weight, we always recommend choosing the larger size. It is much better to have a little extra space than to have an urn that is too small. You can always place a small memento, like a lock of fur or a collar, inside alongside the remains.
The Concept of "Sharing" or "Keepsake" Urns
Sometimes, families choose to divide a loved one's ashes among several relatives. In this case, our 5-cubic-inch mini urns are the perfect choice. They are designed to hold a "token" portion of remains, allowing everyone to keep a beautiful, hand-painted piece of memory in their own home.
